This one’s Barah Aana directed by Raja Menon and produced by Bandra West Pictures and has him paired alongside Vijay Raaz for the first time since Monsoon Wedding. The film, according to the veteran, explores the underbelly of Mumbai “which many a times people pretend does not exist”. So the film has humour, but at the same time it’s not slapstick comedy. “This one is a lighthearted drama in which a driver played by me, a watchman, and a waiter accidentally stumble into a crime and then realise it’s not a bad business. It has lots of humour, but at the same time it’s edgy and realistic — it’s the humour of real life,” said Naseer. In the film, he has the least dialogues. “It’s only at the end that you hear me talk. The driver’s character is like me, I talk only when it’s needed,” said the actor whose films do the talking for him.
“The purpose of films of mine like Khuda Ke Liye, Shoot on Sight, A Wednesday, Parzania, is to ask a question, to leave you thinking. But at the same time, I don’t take credit for them because they were so well written, any competent actor could have done them,” admitted Naseer, adding, “only competent actors and not the so-called top league actors of today!”
That’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t watch masala films, the last one he acted in was Krrish and that too “very reluctantly”. “I got tired of commercial films long time ago. Now I want to concentrate on theatre and start teaching acting,” he said. But he’s proud of Barah Aana and recently hosted a private screening for friends including Aamir Khan, Zoya Akhtar, Vishal Bharadwaj, Paresh Rawal, John Abraham, Imran Khan and Neeraj Pandey — and got rave reviews for the same. Like A Wednesday, Barah Aana also leaves you thinking. “Why does the common man have to bear the brunt always? Some bloody politician passes by in a convoy of cars and the common man has to wait,” said the actor whose film releases in theatres today.
